With a market cap of US$117.16 billion as of early 2006,
Google is the largest Internet search company in the world.
They made it into a company, Google Inc., on September 7,
1998 at a friend's garage in Menlo Park, California. In
February 1999, the company went to 165 University Ave.,
Palo Alto, California. Then, later that year, it went to
the "Googleplex". From mail to maps, to groups,
no doubt Google is considered as one of the most consistent
and best search engine of this era.
Google stemmed from a Stanford research project to find
authentic and reliable link sources on the internet. Larry
Page and Sergey Brin began working on Backrub in January
96. However, after receiving no conducive results from shopping
the Google search technology, they started their own company.
Their endeavors paid off, as they won distribution partnerships
with AOL and Yahoo! that helped boost their image as the
leader of their industry.
Initially searching was thought of as a major loss leader,
and they weren't interested in building a company of their
own around their newly developed technology.
Among the many that they called on, David Filo was a friend
and the founder of Yahoo!, who agreed whole heartedly on
the soundproof ness of their technology, yet encouraged
Larry and Sergey to grow the service themselves by initiating
a search engine company. "When it's fully developed
and scalable," he told them, "let's talk again."
Others, however, weren't as enthusiastic about Google.
One portal CEO said, "As long as we're 80 percent as
good as our competitors, that's good enough. Our users don't
really care about search." Time showed that Filo's
push was in the right direction when, Google proved to be
worth over 100 billion dollars by the end of 2005.
Google being the leader in the search engines has the highest
shares so far with a massive share of 43.7% to their name.
