Since, its debut in 1995, MSN has grown from having fewer
than 1 million dial up customers, to 9.1 million subscribers
and more than 400 million monthly users worldwide who use
MSN to gather the information they need.
MSN search had many manifestations, being powered by the
likes of Inktomi and Looksmart for a number of years. After
Yahoo! Bought Inktomi and Overture it was obvious to Microsoft
that they needed to develop their own search product to
prove that they could survive and be more successful without
the help of other search engines in their league. They launched
their technology preview of their search engine around July
1st of 2004.
They formally switched from Yahoo! Organic search results
to their own in-house technology on January, 31st 2005.
Earlier this year, MSN announced they dumped Yahoo's! Search
ad program on May 4th, 2006.
There is a lot of speculation about whether MSN will achieve
dominance among search engines, even given Microsoft's financial
and marketing muscle. Becoming the alpha site will certainly
take time and money. In the longer run, MSN's search engine
will probably have to pay for itself, too. Microsoft will
lose online advertising revenues that it has gotten through
its Yahoo! affiliation and will need to build their own
roster of advertisers.
Overall, MSN has proven itself as a powerful engine. MSN
may become a bigger or the biggest search engine. At the
practical level, we have already seen changes in search
engine rankings at MSN. Presumably these are related to
